2024-2025 State of the Arts in HISD Report

Each year, Arts Connect Houston publishes an annual data report covering arts education access data findings from the previous Houston Independent School District school year.
This year's report covers data from the 2024-25 school year.

In this report, you will see key findings like:

  1. 15% of campuses reported no fine arts teachers in the 2024-25 school year

  2. 65% of high schools had more than 220 students per fine arts teacher

  3. 65% of high schools, 50% of middle/high combination schools, and 20% of middle schools reported offering four or more fine arts disciplines.

Arts Connect looks forward to working with HISD Fine Arts to support these recommendations:

  1. Hiring more certified fine arts teachers to reduce the student per fine arts teacher ratio and eliminate arts deserts district-wide

  2. Including the arts in every campus' strategic plan and ensure that at least one fine arts representative participates in school governance

  3. Offering opportunities in arts-specific professional development for both fine arts teachers and core content teachers

This report is designed to serve as a tool for the Houston community. Use the report to help keep your friends and colleagues up-to-date on arts education in our community, be an informed advocate for fine arts education access for students in HISD and beyond, and identify areas of need within HISD that you can help support.
